The CX-60 follows Mazda's simple and elegant design philosophy. Its appearance is similar to the smaller CX-5, but it is larger and has a stronger road presence. Instead of using complicated lines and unnecessary details, Mazda focuses on a clean and modern exterior.
Inside, the CX-60 offers a high-quality cabin with comfortable seats, premium materials, and plenty of space for five passengers. The dashboard is logically designed, and the technology is easy to understand and operate. The vehicle also comes with a generous amount of standard equipment. However, unlike the larger Mazda CX-80, the CX-60 does not offer a seven-seat option.
Engine Options and Performance
The Mazda CX-60 is available with two main powertrain options. The first is a plug-in hybrid system that combines a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor. Together, they produce 323 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. Power is delivered through an eight-speed automatic transmission to all four wheels.
This powerful combination allows the CX-60 to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in just 5.8 seconds, with a maximum speed of 124 mph. These figures make it one of Mazda's most powerful production vehicles.
The second option is a 3.3-litre six-cylinder diesel engine with mild-hybrid technology. It is available with either 197 or 251 horsepower. The lower-powered version uses rear-wheel drive, while the more powerful version offers all-wheel drive. The diesel engine provides smoother performance than the plug-in hybrid, although it can sound rough when idling.
Fuel Economy and Electric Range
One of the main advantages of the plug-in hybrid CX-60 is its ability to drive using electricity alone. Its 17.8 kWh battery provides an official electric driving range of approximately 39 miles. This makes it suitable for short daily journeys without using petrol.
Mazda claims an impressive fuel economy figure of 201.8 mpg for the plug-in hybrid. However, real-world consumption depends heavily on how frequently the battery is charged. When the battery is empty, fuel economy can fall to around 35 mpg during motorway driving. Drivers who regularly charge the vehicle and mainly travel short distances may achieve more than 80 mpg.
The diesel version offers an official fuel economy figure of approximately 55 mpg, making it a practical alternative for drivers who regularly travel longer distances.
Driving Experience and Comfort
The CX-60 delivers strong acceleration and generally comfortable driving characteristics. Its suspension and handling are suitable for everyday family use, while the spacious interior makes longer journeys more enjoyable.
However, the driving experience is not perfect. The plug-in hybrid system sometimes struggles to deliver smooth power, and the interaction between the petrol engine, electric motor, and automatic gearbox needs improvement. In addition, the steering feels less responsive than that of some premium competitors.
Although the CX-60 performs well in normal driving conditions, models such as the BMW X3 and Mercedes GLC offer a more refined and engaging driving experience.
Final Verdict
Overall, the Mazda CX-60 is a well-designed and practical family SUV with many attractive features. Its greatest strengths are its premium interior, user-friendly technology, generous equipment, and impressive hybrid performance.
Nevertheless, Mazda still needs to improve the smoothness of its plug-in hybrid system and the steering response. Despite these disadvantages, the CX-60 remains a strong competitor in the SUV market. It offers much of the comfort and quality associated with expensive German SUVs at a more affordable price, making it an appealing choice for families seeking luxury, practicality, and efficiency.
