The Mahdist Army emerged in Sudan during one of the most dramatic uprisings of nineteenth-century Africa. Beginning in 1881 under Muhammad Ahmad, who proclaimed himself the Mahdi, the movement grew from a religious and political revolt into a powerful military force that defeated several Egyptian armies and established the Mahdist State. In this African history documentary, The Warfare Archives explores the rise of the Mahdist Army, its recruitment, organization, weapons, commanders, battlefield tactics, and the campaigns that transformed Sudan during the late nineteenth century. Discover how Mahdist forces expanded across Sudan, defeated the army of Hicks Pasha, captured Khartoum in 1885, and confronted Egyptian and British-led forces across the region. The documentary also examines the leadership of Muhammad Ahmad and his successor Abdallahi ibn Muhammad, the composition of Mahdist forces, their use of infantry and cavalry, and the challenges of fighting increasingly modern armies equipped with rifles, artillery, and machine guns. From the victories of the early Mahdist uprising to the decisive Battle of Omdurman in 1898, the story of the Mahdist Army reveals the collision between indigenous military mobilization, religious authority, imperial expansion, and rapidly changing military technology.
