2008 Euros Compulsory Dance Full "Yankee Polka" (Eurosport) | Delobel & Schoenfelder Lead

Summary: The ice dance competition at the 2008 European Championships in Zagreb opened with the fast and intricate Yankee Polka compulsory dance, with British commentators Nicky Slater and Chris Howarth closely examining the couples’ edge quality, pattern, speed, unison and precision of movement. Early leaders Oksana Domnina / Maxim Shabalin (Оксана Домнина / Максим Шабалин, RUS) produced a powerful performance despite Shabalin’s recent knee surgery, scoring 40.25. Jana Khokhlova / Sergei Novitski (Яна Хохлова / Сергей Новицкий, RUS) combined strong skating with expressive presentation, while Federica Faiella / Massimo Scali (ITA) brought an energetic interpretation particularly well suited to the character of the Yankee Polka. Nathalie Péchalat / Fabian Bourzat (FRA) also impressed with a crisp performance despite Bourzat having only recently returned to the ice following knee surgery. The standout performance came from defending European champions Isabelle Delobel / Olivier Schoenfelder (FRA). Their Western-themed presentation added playful character around the prescribed steps without losing the precision required of the compulsory dance. Slater regarded it as the strongest overall performance he had seen during the event, and the judges agreed: 41.25 put Delobel/Schoenfelder exactly one point ahead of Domnina/Shabalin. Khokhlova/Novitski finished the compulsory dance third with 37.37, followed by Faiella/Scali on 36.87 and Péchalat/Bourzat on 34.58. Britain’s Sinead Kerr / John Kerr (GBR) produced a fast, driving Yankee Polka to take sixth with a season’s-best 33.55, while rising Italians Anna Cappellini / Luca Lanotte (ITA) finished tenth. The broadcast also captured a dramatic interruption for Armenia’s Anastasia Grebenkina / Vazgen Azroyan (Анастасия Гребёнкина / Вазген Азроян, ARM) after Grebenkina fell heavily. She recovered and the couple were able to complete their compulsory dance.
