VLAN Trunking in Cisco Packet Tracer: learn how to configure trunk links between 3 Cisco 2960 switches so devices in the same VLAN can communicate across different switches. Step-by-step CCNA lab using access ports, VLANs, and 802.1Q trunking.
Why can't devices in the same VLAN talk across different switches? Because inter-switch links default to access ports in VLAN 1, so VLAN 10 and VLAN 20 traffic never crosses. In this lab, we fix it with trunk ports.

🖥 LAB DETAILS
Devices: 3x Cisco 2960 switches, 6x PCs (router added for the next lab)
VLAN 10 (HR): PC0 192.168.1.2 | PC2 192.168.1.3 | PC4 192.168.1.4
VLAN 20 (IT): PC1 192.168.2.2 | PC3 192.168.2.3 | PC5 192.168.2.4
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
💻 CLI COMMANDS USED
enable
configure terminal
vlan 10
name HR
vlan 20
name IT
interface FastEthernet0/1
switchport mode access
switchport access vlan 10
interface FastEthernet0/2
switchport mode access
switchport access vlan 20
interface FastEthernet0/24
switchport mode trunk
end
show vlan brief
show interfaces trunk
🛠 TROUBLESHOOTING TIPS
Both ends of every link must be set to trunk
VLANs must exist on all three switches
The first ping may time out while ARP resolves, so try again
