Night rain patters on the broad lotus leaves outside your window, and the pond lies dark and still.
Candlelight and gentle cello keep you company through a calm late-summer night of reading and study.
The rain came on after dusk and has been steady ever since — never hard, only patient. You hear it first on the broad lotus leaves, a scatter of soft taps spread across the whole pond, every leaf answering at its own pitch, and beneath that the finer sound of water finding the eaves and running off the tiles in one thin unbroken thread. The pavilion stands a little way out over the pond on its stone piers, so the water is on three sides of you and the night is on all of them. Past the balustrade the surface lies dark and almost perfectly still; the rain hardly troubles it, and what it does make are small rings that open, cross one another, and are gone. A lantern hangs at the corner of the eaves and lays a long coin of amber down on the water, doubled there and faintly shivering, and further out one or two lamps on the far bank do the same, so the pond seems to hold a second row of lights beneath the first. The leaves stand high on their stems, wide as dinner plates, tipping as the rain gathers in their hollows and righting themselves the moment it rolls off in a single silver bead. The flowers closed hours ago. Inside, the room is small — a low desk, an ink stone going cold, four candles that barely move and repeat themselves in the black glass beside your open books. The cello leans within reach and answers softly when you ask it to: long bowed notes, dark and unhurried, one phrase and then a pause wide enough for the rain to fill. This is your lotus pond library — a single lit pavilion at the edge of the dark water, with the whole late-summer night ahead of you and nothing at all asked of you.
Give these hours over to the still water, the rain on the broad leaves, and the low warm voice of the cello. More than three hours of unhurried dark-academia ambience for long reading, late study, quiet writing, and falling asleep — nothing sudden, nothing loud, only the rain thinning and gathering again, the lantern shivering on the pond, and a cello that plays one line and then leaves room for the water to answer. Start it, let the candlelight settle into the dark glass, and stay out over the pond until the rain has worn itself out and the water begins to hold the first grey of the sky.
