In Atchison, Kansas, a seemingly unremarkable residence became the center of one of America's most notorious paranormal cases. Its reputation rests on two connected stories. The first is a legend about a six-year-old girl who supposedly died during emergency surgery inside the house. According to the tale, her final moments were filled with confusion, pain, and terror. The second story begins more than a century later, when a young couple reported a series of disturbing experiences that eventually attracted the attention of paranormal investigators and television crews. Their accounts included unexplained marks on the mans body, strange noises, moving objects, and encounters with what they believed was a supernatural presence. Some came to believe that the spirit of a little girl was responsible. Others wondered whether the child was merely the face of something much darker. But there is a problem with the story. The tragic death that supposedly explains the haunting is not securely established by independently verified historical evidence. So what really happened inside this house? Was a frightened child reaching out from beyond the grave? Was something more sinister exploiting the legend?
