Devils Tower is one of those places you have to see to believe!
Native American tribes also refer to Devils Tower as "Bear Lodge". Stories/Legend tell of several children playing when giant bears chased them. To save the children, the Great Spirit raised the earth high into the sky. The aggressive bears tried to climb up, scratching deep claw marks into the stone sides before sliding back down. This being represented in the deep vertical groves in the rock around the tower.
Did you know that President Theodore Roosevelt designated Devils Tower as the nation’s first National Monument in 1906?
We watched Tower Climbers making their way up the massive rock formation, and learned about the Belle Fourche River, whose name means “beautiful fork.”
We also visited Prairie Dog Town and the fascinating Wind Circle Sculpture, created by Japanese sculptor Junky Muto. The sculpture was designed to perfectly frame Devils Tower—and it really is something special to see!
And if you’re a movie fan, here’s a fun fact: Devils Tower was featured in the 1977 movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind. 👽
From the stories and history to the wildlife, climbers, and incredible scenery, Devils Tower was definitely a stop worth making!
Recommend during the busier months to arrive before 9am or after 4pm. The parking areas are small. If you have a larger rig with a toad, recommendation is to park at the picnic area just inside the entrance, unhook, and then drive to the parking area near the visitor center.
