The Detour We’ll Never Forget | Riding to Combe Laval Sometimes the best roads are the ones you never planned to ride. 🏍️🇫🇷 We left Grenoble that morning under perfect blue skies with one destination in mind: Combe Laval, one of the most spectacular roads in France. #CombeLaval #BMWK1600GTL #MotorcycleTouring The plan was simple. Unfortunately, we're not particularly good at simple. After a short stretch of motorway, I'd had enough. Motorways are efficient, predictable and fast — three qualities I apparently had absolutely no interest in that morning. So we left. Almost immediately the journey changed. Traffic disappeared, the roads became smaller, and we found ourselves riding through beautiful little French villages on our way toward the Vercors mountains. Everything was going perfectly. Until the road was closed. Now, in my defence, I did take French at school. Admittedly, that was almost forty years ago, so there is a slight possibility that I'd already passed a sign explaining the situation. Several weeks of questionable European coffee probably hadn't helped either. ☕😄 Google Maps had a perfectly sensible solution: Turn around. Go back. Rejoin the motorway. Absolutely not. Instead, another tiny road appeared on the map, climbing higher into the hills and roughly following the direction we wanted to travel. It looked longer. Slower. And considerably less sensible. Perfect. What followed became one of the most unexpected and memorable rides of the entire trip. A narrow, steep mountain road barely wide enough for a car. Broken asphalt that appeared to have lost contact with whoever laid it decades ago. Gravel, potholes and increasingly questionable decisions — all tackled on a fully loaded BMW K1600 GTL, two-up. At one point we even met a woman leading a horse along the road. 160 horsepower politely waited for one. Eventually our accidental mountain adventure delivered us back onto something recognisable as a proper road, and we continued through the beautiful villages of the Vercors toward the place we'd actually travelled all this way to see: Combe Laval. And what a place it is. Carved directly into the limestone cliffs of the Vercors, the historic Combe Laval road was constructed in the late 19th century to help transport timber from the forests above. Tunnels were cut through solid rock and sections of road were built along enormous cliff faces overlooking the valley below. More than a century later, the result is still extraordinary. We stopped along the way to take photographs, fly the drone and simply spend some time taking in a road I'd wanted to experience for a very long time. Combe Laval was every bit as spectacular as I'd hoped. But looking back at this particular day... Sometimes the GPS gives you an answer you don't like. And sometimes ignoring the sensible option gives you a road you'll remember for the rest of your life. The destination gives you the plan. The unexpected gives you the story.
