After reacting to Nene Royal’s “Zombie,” I went down the rabbit hole and watched several other reactors discover her for the first time.
One comment from Elizabeth at The Charismatic Voice really stuck with me: Nene feels like part of the future of rock music.
No single artist is the future of rock, obviously, but between performers like Nene Royal and the women of The Warning, I feel pretty damn good about where rock music is heading.
With “Hysteria,” I also started noticing some patterns in Nene’s performances. She’ll absolutely melt your face with the guitar and then let out that scream before really settling into the song. I found myself wondering whether that might actually be her way of shaking off whatever nerves are left and putting herself back into the headspace where she is most comfortable performing.
Because underneath all of this ridiculous talent, she is still a young performer standing on an enormous stage.
Vocally, I also kept hearing something that reminded me of Amy Winehouse in the way Nene bends and modifies certain vowel sounds. Then she started playing around with that low, gritty onset that reminded me a little of Christina Aguilera.
She is ridiculously fun to watch. Her energy is infectious, and it is easy to understand why so many people have gotten behind her.
We are now officially caught up with Nene Royal’s America’s Got Talent performances.
So where do we go next from her back catalog?
