Lord Brahma then guided them towards Lord Vishnu, the protector of the universe. Reclining upon the divine serpent Sheshnag in the cosmic ocean, Lord Vishnu listened to the prayers of the gods. With a divine smile, He made a promise that would change the destiny of the Earth. He would take birth as a human being in the royal family of Ayodhya, as the son of King Dasharatha, and restore Dharma. *THE DIVINE STORY OF AYODHYA* Meanwhile, in the beautiful kingdom of Ayodhya, King Dasharatha ruled with wisdom and dignity. He had a magnificent palace, a powerful army, a prosperous kingdom and three queens—Maharani Kaushalya, Maharani Kaikeyi and Maharani Sumitra. Yet, despite possessing everything, the king had one deep sorrow. He had no children. His heart longed for an heir who could carry forward the royal lineage of Ayodhya. Little did he know that the Supreme Lord Himself was destined to be born in his palace.
