At the Battle of Pydna in 168 BC, the Roman army of Lucius Aemilius Paullus faced King Perseus of Macedon and the terrifying Macedonian phalanx, a formation built around dense ranks of long sarissa pikes that seemed nearly impossible to attack from the front. This video follows the battle from the phalanx’s devastating advance across level ground to the moment uneven terrain disrupted its rigid formation, opened gaps between Macedonian units, and allowed flexible Roman maniples to penetrate the line with shields and short swords. The story reveals why Rome’s victory was not simply a case of the gladius defeating the sarissa, but a dramatic example of tactical adaptability exploiting the structural weakness of an otherwise formidable military system during the Third Macedonian War.
