“You don’t seem like you have ADHD.”
But what if you’re only seeing the outcome—not everything it takes to create it?
For some adults with ADHD, especially women diagnosed later in life, difficulties may be hidden behind extensive compensatory strategies: reminders, overpreparing, perfectionism, arriving extremely early, monitoring behavior, creating rigid systems, or putting enormous effort into appearing organized and “fine.”
In this episode of Mindful Chatting, therapist Kristin explores the lived experience often described as ADHD masking and compensation.
You’ll hear about:
→ ADHD masking and compensatory strategies
→ Late-diagnosed ADHD in women
→ Visible competence vs. invisible effort
→ Overpreparing and perfectionism
→ Social masking
→ Why success doesn’t necessarily rule out struggle
→ What happens when life demands exceed your compensatory strategies
→ The difference between support and performance
→ How to keep strategies that genuinely help without using them to punish yourself
Research into ADHD-specific masking/camouflaging is still developing, and the construct is not itself a formal ADHD diagnostic criterion. This episode uses “masking” primarily to describe the lived experience of hiding or compensating for difficulties.
Being able to compensate for a difficulty doesn’t mean the difficulty isn’t there.
