This episode of WABI CHANNEL welcomes sashimono craftsman Shiro Deguchi to Hanyu Uchikutei. Based in Osaka, he has worked in the tradition of karaki sashimono for more than sixty years. In this interview, he discusses the craft of making display stands and the philosophy that guides his work. A sashimono craftsman precisely shapes wooden components and joins them together to create furniture and furnishings, traditionally without relying on nails. Karaki sashimono craftsmen work with dense hardwoods such as shitan, ebony, and karin. Deguchi works primarily with shitan, creating slender, refined display stands that enhance bonsai and suiseki. He reveals the ingenuity behind their delicate appearance: hidden reinforcement that preserves their slender lines, curved legs carved from wide pieces of wood, careful material selection based on the character of each piece of timber, precise joinery, and uncompromising polishing and finishing. The conversation also explores how listening to those who use his stands has shaped the evolution of his style, as well as the challenges of passing traditional craftsmanship on to the next generation. Discover the skill and spirit shaped by more than half a century of dedicated work.
