Exodus 1–3 | Israel's Oppression, Moses' Call & God's Deliverance

Exodus chapters 1–3 begin the story of Israel's deliverance from slavery in Egypt. A new Pharaoh rises who does not remember Joseph and becomes afraid of the growing Israelite population. He oppresses the Israelites and orders that every Hebrew baby boy be killed. God preserves Moses, who is rescued from the Nile and raised in Pharaoh's household. After fleeing Egypt, Moses encounters God in the burning bush. God reveals Himself as the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and calls Moses to lead Israel out of slavery. These chapters remind us that God sees the suffering of His people, hears their cries, and works through unexpected people to accomplish His purposes. 🔹 Chapter Breakdown 📖 Exodus 1 – Israel Oppressed in Egypt The descendants of Jacob multiply greatly in Egypt. A new Pharaoh becomes afraid of Israel's growing population. The Egyptians enslave the Israelites and make their lives bitter. Pharaoh orders the Hebrew midwives to kill newborn boys. The midwives fear God and refuse to obey Pharaoh. Pharaoh then commands that every Hebrew baby boy be thrown into the Nile. 📖 Exodus 2 – The Birth and Early Life of Moses Moses is born during Pharaoh's persecution. His mother hides him and places him in a basket on the Nile. Pharaoh's daughter finds and adopts him. Moses grows up in Pharaoh's household but identifies with his Hebrew people. After killing an Egyptian who was beating a Hebrew, Moses flees to Midian. Moses marries Zipporah and begins a new life. The Israelites cry out to God because of their suffering. God hears their cries and remembers His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. 📖 Exodus 3 – God Calls Moses Moses encounters the burning bush on Mount Horeb. God calls Moses and tells him to remove his sandals because the ground is holy. God declares that He has seen Israel's suffering and heard their cries. He commissions Moses to lead Israel out of Egypt. Moses asks God's name. God declares, "I AM THAT I AM." God promises to deliver Israel and bring them into the Promised Land. 🔹 Key Lessons God sees the suffering of His people even when He appears silent. Obedience to God is more important than obeying ungodly commands. God can preserve His purpose even in the midst of persecution. Our past failures do not disqualify us from God's calling. God often prepares people privately before using them publicly. God hears the prayers and cries of His people. God's identity and character are the foundation of His promises. 🔹 Key Bible Verses Exodus 2:24 "And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob." Exodus 3:7 "I have surely seen the affliction of my people which are in Egypt, and have heard their cry..." Exodus 3:10 "Come now therefore, and I will send thee unto Pharaoh, that thou mayest bring forth my people..." Exodus 3:14 "I AM THAT I AM..." 🔹 Application Trust God when you are going through a difficult season. Never assume that God has forgotten you because His answer seems delayed. Stand for what is right even when it requires courage. Allow God to prepare you before stepping into your purpose. Do not let past failures prevent you from responding to God's call. Remember that God is not only aware of your situation—He is able to act. Place your confidence in who God is rather than in your own ability. 🔹 Prayer Heavenly Father, thank You because You see our struggles and hear our cries. Help me trust You during seasons when I cannot understand what You are doing. Give me courage to obey You and wisdom to recognize Your calling. Remove fear and insecurity from my heart, and prepare me to be useful for Your purpose. May I always remember that You are the great I AM, faithful and powerful in every situation. In Jesus' name, Amen. Closing Thought Exodus 1–3 shows that God's silence does not mean His absence. For generations, Israel suffered under Egyptian oppression, but God had not forgotten His covenant. He was preparing Moses and arranging circumstances for Israel's deliverance. When God finally spoke to Moses from the burning bush, He revealed that He had seen, heard, and known the suffering of His people.
