One of the questions we hear surprisingly often is this:
“Why don’t we ever see ladyboys over 40?”
At first glance, it sounds simple. But once you start unpacking it, the answer opens up a much bigger conversation about visibility, beauty standards, relationships, work, aging, culture, economics, and how Thailand itself quietly changes people over time.
In this video, we talk honestly about long-term life in Thailand, transgender identity, aging within Thai society, and why many older transgender women simply become less visible to tourists and short-term visitors. Some settle into ordinary family life. Some move into different careers. Some leave nightlife behind entirely. And many just blend into everyday Thailand so naturally that people stop noticing altogether.
That’s one of the strange things about living here long-term. The version of Thailand tourists often see is only a tiny slice of the real country.
This conversation also touches on beauty expectations, online perceptions, relationships, changing priorities with age, and the difference between fantasy-driven Thailand content and lived reality. As always, we approach it from personal experience, daily life, and years of conversations rather than sensationalism.
Alongside all that, it’s still another ordinary day in Thailand... food, conversation, wandering thoughts, and trying to make sense of the world around us.
Because after enough years here, you slowly realize Thailand is rarely what people think it is from the outside looking in.
