Technical skills and KPIs are important in construction jobs - but employers expect much more from a good Construction Professional.
In this video, we explain what Construction Employers really expect from Civil Engineers, Project Managers, Site Engineers and other professionals beyond qualifications, experience and technical capability.
The key expectations covered are:
1. Ownership - Follow through instead of only forwarding problems
2. Reliability - Make realistic commitments and communicate delays early
3. Transparency - Report the actual project position, including bad news
4. Judgment - Analyse problems and clearly explain where support or approval is needed
5. Safety & Quality - Never sacrifice them just to achieve a target
6. Commercial Awareness - Treat manpower, material, cost and project resources responsibly
7. Integrity - Keep measurements, records, approvals and decisions honest
8. Teamwork - Respect people and coordinate across departments
9. Documentation - Maintain clear, usable and professional records
10. Professional Representation - Do not promise what you cannot authorise
11. Learning - Accept feedback and continuously improve
12. Professional Continuity - Honour commitments and provide proper handover
A Construction Professional should not only ask:
“Did I achieve my KPI?”
Also ask:
“Did I deliver my work honestly, reliably, safely and in a way that others could depend on?”
Employers also have responsibilities.
They should provide:
Clear scope and priorities
Proper authority
Required resources
Safe working conditions
Agreed compensation
Timely decisions
Support and guidance
Reasonable opportunities to learn and grow
Ownership does not mean unlimited responsibility.
Accountability does not mean blame for everything.
Flexibility does not mean an undefined job.
Loyalty does not mean remaining silent about misconduct.
For interviews, do not only say:
“I am hardworking and responsible.”
Instead, explain real examples where you identified a problem, communicated it early, coordinated with others and followed through until the next action was clear.
This video is especially useful for:

Architects
Site Engineers
Planning Engineers
Quantity Surveyors
