America's emergency oil reserve is at its lowest level since 1982, and the levers behind the gas price plan were loans that come due after the 3 November election, the same day the one promise about Iran runs out.
Since March the government has lent about a third of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to oil companies, most of it due back in 2027 and 2028. The tax break truckers were promised in October is a postponement. The Russian diesel deal is worth a few cents a gallon, on a licence that ends in April. Wade, an owner-operator hauling between Houston and Atlanta, walks the calendar and keeps the tab.

Every number is real, as of 19 October 2026. Wade is an illustration built from the truckers' trade group's survey: about 312 gallons of diesel a week. The household figure of about $730 a year for every $1 a gallon is this channel's arithmetic from the Bureau of Labor Statistics' consumer spending survey. The reserve's level is the Energy Information Administration's weekly figure. Exchange terms and return windows are from the Department of Energy's announcements and bid documents. Forecasts are EIA's Short-Term Energy Outlook of 6 October. The seasonal figures are this channel's measurements from EIA weekly prices, 2000 to 2025. Quotes, strikes and the post are as reported in the press.
