The burnt offering, the grain offering, and the peace offering, of which God spoke from Leviticus chapter 1 to chapter 3, were sacrifices a person offered willingly, wanting to come to God. But arriving at chapter 4, God speaks for the first time of the sacrifice for sin, that is, the sin offering. And at its very head comes a word that takes hold of us. He says, “If a person sins unintentionally against any of the commandments of the LORD” (Leviticus 4:2). He said, sins unintentionally. Of the ruler He said, “Done something unintentionally against any of the commandments of the LORD his God in anything which should not be done, and is guilty” (Leviticus 4:22), and of the common person He likewise said, “Sins unintentionally by doing something against any of the commandments of the LORD in anything which ought not to be done, and is guilty” (Leviticus 4:27). God repeated this word three times.
