Intentional Foul? Flagrant Foul? Common Foul? - May Online Meeting - Video Review

Monthly online meeting, hosted by Officials Institute chairman, Joshua Schroeder, on 5/18/23 focused on the topic of Intentional Fouls. Determining whether a hard foul rises to the level of an intentional or flagrant foul can be difficult. Understanding each game has it's own context and every play can be judged on the feel of that game can help. The Officials Institute believes watching video together builds confidence with individual officials while forming credibility as a community of officials. This helps promote support for each other and keeps us all in a perpetual state of learning. All videos shown in this meeting are NFHS high school basketball games. This online meeting will showcase 11 different video clips discussing coaches AND 2 BONUS CLIPS. 0:00 - Intro 1:41 - Fast break leads to a hard foul from behind with what appears to be no play on the ball. This is an intentional foul. Let's discuss why. 15:29 - Another fast break with a more controlled foul, but does this "wrap up" rise to an intentional foul level. 23:30 - Fast break with a player making a swipe at the ball only to have the official call an intentional foul. What do you think? 33:53 - Technical foul called in this play but it should have been intentional and possibly a flagrant with a player ejection for punching. 36:48 - Drive through the lane with a foul immediately called intentional by the Lead. Should this be a discussion? Could it have been a common foul? 47:11 - Play submitted by a viewer. Is this common or intentional? Is there any consideration for how NCAA or NBA calls these types of plays? 54:09 - Elbow in the face of a defender called a player control foul but can contact that high, with an excessive moving elbow, be considered intentional? 58:37 - BONUS CLIP - 2 different angles. Previously shown on the OI facebook group. 1:02:50 - Next Meeting - NEW SCHEDULE Watching video clips is a good way to stay connected to the skill of officiating basketball but education and learning can more effectively be attained doing it in a group with some direction from a key speaker. Remembering specific rules and application of those rules is easier when visual aids are used to present in a way that is easy to listen to and understand. The Officials Institute, and their monthly video review meetings, create a fun environment that allows participants to speak up and voice their opinions on plays without negative retribution or rebuttals. Everyone's opinion is worth something and adds to the overall learning experience that everyone should strive for, regardless of years of experience.
