What if the northern lights were dancing over your house tonight - and you walked right past them? It happens. To your eyes, a faint aurora can look like a pale gray cloud. Point your phone at it, and it may light up pink and green.
In this video: where the light comes from (a storm cloud from the Sun, Earth's magnetic shield and the "snap" that sends electrons into the sky), why oxygen glows green and red, why your eyes miss the colors, the one number to check (NOAA's K index and storm levels G1 to G5, with how far south each level has been seen), and a simple seven-step plan for the night - including the phone settings. Then the strangest auroras we know of: a green sky on Mars and the never-ending auroras of Jupiter.
The plan in short:
1. A day or two ahead: watch for a geomagnetic storm watch from NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center (free at spaceweather.gov).
2. On the night: check the K index and NOAA's 30-minute aurora forecast.
3. Get away from city lights, with a wide, low view to the north.
4. The best show is usually within an hour or two of midnight. Check for clouds and a bright Moon.
5. Give your eyes about 20 to 30 minutes in the dark; use a red light.
6. Phone: flash off, night mode or a few-second exposure, something steady, a short timer. Aim north, low.
7. Be patient - auroras often come in bursts.
Good to know: the state examples are NOAA's farthest sightings, not promises, and forecasts are forecasts - a strong storm can still disappoint if its magnetic field points the wrong way.
