In 2008, water in Riyadh reached the tap only once every five days. By 2011, it was still only once every two and a half days — in Jeddah, once every 23 days in 2008. This is the capital of one of the richest oil nations on Earth. But you cannot drink crude oil, and the whole country has no year-round river and no natural lake. Follow one drop of water from the sea to the tap, through six locks: fossil water drained by wheat farming, the hardest seawater on Earth, algae and oil, desalination at Shoaiba and Ras Al-Khair, a 600-metre pipeline lift to Riyadh, and a network losing 34% of its water. In the end, three locks really broke.
