Ukraine; Odesa city; Circus | UA: м. Одеса; Цирк The Odesa State Circus is one of the oldest permanent circus venues in Ukraine and an important part of Odesa's entertainment and architectural heritage. The historic building opened in 1894 and has remained closely associated with circus culture for over a century. The building is often referred to as the "Iron Circus" because its supporting frame was constructed from metal components designed and manufactured in Germany. According to circus representatives, the unusual metal frame is highly corrosion-resistant and has become one of the building's defining technical features. Another distinctive feature is its large dome, which is approximately 22 meters high, higher than the traditional 18-meter standard used in many historic circus buildings. This provided additional space for aerial performances and contributed to the unique character of the auditorium. The circus was built on the initiative of businessman Wilhelm Sanzenbacher and designed by engineer A. Golfand. Following the political changes of the early 20th century, the building became municipal property, and in 1925, it was designated a state circus. For decades, its arena hosted acrobats, clowns, aerialists, and many renowned circus performers. Historical evidence also links the venue to such renowned performers as strongman Ivan Piddubny and the Durov circus dynasty. The circus continues to operate as an entertainment venue and hosts special projects and festivals. Among them is the Iron Circus Festival, a Ukrainian circus festival aimed at children and young performers, designed to give aspiring artists the opportunity to perform in professional programs.
