Precision Shooting With The Swiss K 31 Rifle

In our last video we looked at the Feldschiessen course of fire. That’s shooting against the B target, with multishot strings of fire. This time we’re looking at the expert category of Swiss shooting that determines how precise a shot are you with the service rifle, really. This precision shooting is all done on the A target. The Swiss name for this course of fire is the Einzelwettschiessen. .On the A target, the 10 ring is the size of a teacup. So great accuracy is needed. With K-31s, we are using iron sights and World War II rifles and thirty year old ammo. It’s great fun. But what rifle came before this? The Schmidt Rubin series. This is where the heritage comes from. Starting in 1869, the Swiss Army embraced the the Vetterli rifle, which is basically a Winchester 1866 rifle front end with a bolt action. In 1889 the Schmidt Rubin emerged with a 12 shot magazine, featuring a new high velocity reduced caliber cartridge, and further modified this Schmidt Rubin design in 1896 and 1911. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schmidt... Then of course came the K-31, officially in use 1931 to 1958 Then the Stg-57, 1957 to 1990, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SIG_SG_510 And finally the Stg-90, which is what the Swiss Army uses now. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SIG_SG_550 Because of California firearms laws, the most recent rifle we can use in the Karabiner 31, this rifle here. In terms of the matches we shoot, it offers no real disadvantage except in terms of recoil. Let’s get into the details of the Einzelwettschiessen, which is essentially slow precise fire. What does Einzelwettschiessen mean? Individual shooting, one-on-one competition. Issued by the SSV, essentially the Swiss NRA, this medal is not often seen outside of Switzerland. But, as you can see, there are replacements. All slow fire, all rested when using a service rifle, all on the A target. Program A is 20 shots for record. There is a category for match rifles. Program D is 10 shots scored individually then a series of 5 shots fired without observation. It’s remarkable how that psyches us out. We follow this course of fire with our K-31s.
