On December 18, 1944, Kampfgruppe Peiper pushed toward Trois-Ponts, Belgium, searching for a fast route west during the Battle of the Bulge. Waiting at this critical junction was Company C of the 51st Engineer Combat Battalion, a small American force tasked with denying the German armor the bridges across the Amblève and Salm Rivers. As Peiper’s tanks approached, the engineers demolished key crossings, cutting the direct road toward Werbomont and the Meuse and forcing the armored column to search for alternate routes. This video follows the desperate defense of Trois-Ponts, the role of the lone 57 mm anti-tank gun, the bridge demolitions, and how terrain, engineering, fuel, and lost time helped undermine the momentum of one of Germany’s most dangerous armored spearheads during the Ardennes offensive.
