At nineteen years old, a mixed-race teenager from Brixton walked into a studio wearing braces and a plastic dress and screamed a sentence that would change punk forever. Her name was Marianne Joan Elliott-Said. The world would know her as Poly Styrene.
She fronted X-Ray Spex, wrote "Oh Bondage Up Yours!" in 1977, and refused every cliché the industry tried to stuff her into. Then, in the middle of recording her masterpiece, she saw a pink fireball over Doncaster and her mind broke open. She was locked up, misdiagnosed, and written off. But her influence is everywhere — from Riot Grrrl to M.I.A. to FKA Twigs.
In this video, I reveal the real story of the girl who invented a new kind of punk and paid for it with her sanity.
This is the story you've never heard.
