മുത്തപ്പൻ എന്ന ദൈവം പലരീതിയിൽ ആണ് കേരളത്തിൽ ആചരിക്കുന്നത്. സാധാരാണയായി മുത്തപ്പൻ കുടുംബദൈവമായി (ഗുരു ദൈവം)ആണ് കുടുംബ ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ ആരാധിക്കുന്നത്. പ്രസിദ്ധമായ പറശ്ശിനിക്കടവ് മുത്തപ്പനും മറ്റ് മുത്തപ്പനും വേറെ ആണ്. കേരളത്തിലെ മിക്കവാറും ഹൈന്ദവ കുടുംബങ്ങളിൽ ഇത് വരുന്നത് അവരുടെ കുടുംബദൈവങ്ങളെ ആദ്യമായി കൊണ്ട് വന്ന് പൂജിച്ച വ്യക്തി എന്നർത്ഥം. സംഹാര മൂർത്തിയായ പരമശിവന്റെ ഭൂത ഗണത്തിൽ ഒന്നാണ് മുത്തപ്പൻ എന്നാണു പറയപ്പെടുന്നത്. മഹാദേവന്റെ അവതാരമായ ഭൈരവനാണ് മുത്തപ്പൻ എന്നും വിശ്വസിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. ഉത്തരകേരളത്തിൽ, പ്രത്യേകിച്ച് കണ്ണൂർ, കാസർഗോഡ് ജില്ലകളിൽ മുത്തപ്പൻ ഒരു തെയ്യക്കോലമാണ്. എന്നാൽ കണ്ണൂരിലെ പറശ്ശിനിക്കടവ് മുത്തപ്പൻ ശൈവ- വൈഷ്ണവ മൂർത്തിയാണ് എന്നാണ് സങ്കൽപ്പം. തെയ്യക്കോലത്തിൽ വരുന്ന പറശ്ശിനിക്കടവ് മുത്തപ്പൻ ഒരേ പരമാത്മാവായ ഭഗവാന്റെ രണ്ട് പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട ദൈവിക ഭാവങ്ങളെയാണ് പ്രതിനിധാനം ചെയ്യുന്നത്; ചന്ദ്രക്കലയുടെ രൂപമുള്ള കിരീടം വച്ച് പരമശിവനെയും, മത്സ്യരൂപമുള്ള കിരീടം വച്ച് ശ്രീ മഹാവിഷ്ണുവിനേയും. തങ്ങളുടെ സങ്കടങ്ങൾ തെയ്യക്കോലത്തിൽ വരുന്ന മുത്തപ്പനോട് നേരിട്ട് പറഞ്ഞു ആശ്വാസം നേടാം എന്ന വിശ്വാസമാണ് ഭക്തരെ പറശ്ശിനിക്കടവ് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലേക്കു ആകർഷിക്കുന്നത്. മക്കളില്ലാതെ വിഷമിച്ച അടിയുറച്ച ശിവഭക്തയായ പാടിക്കുറ്റിയമ്മയ്ക്കും നമ്പൂതിരിക്കും മഹാദേവന്റെ അനുഗ്രഹത്താൽ ലഭിച്ച കുട്ടിയാണ് പിൽക്കാലത്ത് പറശ്ശിനിക്കടവ് മുത്തപ്പൻ എന്ന പേരിൽ അറിയപ്പെട്ടതെന്ന് കഥ. The traditional story of Parassinikkadavu Muthappan describes the background of the deity. The ruler (naduvazhi) Ancharamanaykkal Vazhunnavar of Eruveshi, Kannur was unhappy, as he had no child. His wife Padikutty Amma was a devotee of Lord Shiva. She made a sacrifice to Shiva for children. One day in her dream she saw the Lord. The very next day, while she was returning after a bath from a nearby river, she saw a pretty child lying on a rock nearby (which is worshipped even today).
