Big Ben is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the world, but its story is far more dramatic than its famous chimes suggest.
After the devastating fire of 1834 destroyed most of the Palace of Westminster, Britain began building a new Gothic landmark on the banks of the River Thames. From that rebuilding effort came the clock tower now known as Elizabeth Tower — and the legendary Great Bell, Big Ben.
But the bell's journey was anything but smooth.
The first Great Bell cracked during testing in 1857 and had to be recast. The replacement bell cracked again shortly after it began ringing in 1859. Engineers eventually solved the problem by rotating the bell 90 degrees and replacing its hammer, allowing Big Ben to return to service.
Then came the 20th century.
During the Blitz, bombs struck the Palace of Westminster, and a bomb damaged the glass of Big Ben's south clock face. Yet the clock and bells survived, continuing to chime during the war.
Decades later, a massive conservation project began in 2017. After five years of restoration, Big Ben returned to regular service in November 2022.
This is the story of how fire, engineering failures, war, time, and restoration shaped one of London's greatest icons.
