Denise never thought her 8-year-old son’s 10:30 PM bedtime was a problem. He’s homeschooled, he sleeps later in the morning, he gets enough rest, and their schedule works for their family. Then she casually mentioned his bedtime around a group of other parents…and suddenly, 10:30 sounded a whole lot different.
In tonight’s Scribbles & Screams, we’re getting into one of those parenting rules that seems obvious until the circumstances change. If a child gets enough sleep, wakes up rested, and doesn’t have to be up at 6 AM for school, does the actual bedtime still matter? Or are some of the schedules we consider “normal” built around traditional school rather than the individual child?
I’m Ms. Ashley, an early childhood enthusiast and play advocate, and Scribbles & Screams explores the messy, fascinating, and sometimes uncomfortable parts of childhood, parenting, homeschooling, and education.
So tell me: Would you let an 8-year-old stay up until 10:30 PM if they were still getting enough sleep? 👀
