Sometimes the mountain standing in your way isn't the one in front of you. Sometimes the mountain is you. The Mountain’s Me was mostly written in 2024 following a period when life seemed to keep putting one mountain after another in front of me. Jobs ended. COVID changed everything. Finding work afterward was difficult. Eventually, at age 50, my family and I packed up and left the small Kentucky town where my family had lived for more than 100 years and moved south looking for new opportunities. Leaving that history behind was not easy. But you can’t pay bills or eat with snowballs. Sometimes moving forward means leaving something you love behind. That experience helped shape this song — but the deeper meaning came later. -------------------- 🔹 THE MOUNTAIN INSIDE US We all face different mountains. Debt. Addiction. Alcohol or drugs. Unemployment. A job that is breaking you down. Prison. Illness. Grief. Depression. Divorce. Fear. Failure. Loneliness. Broken relationships. Starting over. But sometimes the circumstance is only part of the mountain. Fear can become a mountain. Doubt can become a mountain. Regret can become a mountain. Old habits can become a mountain. Even the things we once used to protect ourselves can become chains we keep dragging behind us. That realization became the heart of The Mountain’s Me. For years, it can be easy to blame every stone in the road. Then one day you begin to understand: Some mountains are placed in front of us. Others are built inside us. -------------------- 🔹 FAITH IS THE NEXT STEP One of the central ideas in this song is simple: Faith does not always mean knowing how the story ends. Sometimes faith is taking one more step when you cannot see the way. You do not have to understand the entire journey before you begin. You just need enough courage to start. Like a seed growing beneath the surface, change often begins long before anyone else can see it. And sometimes strength is not found by standing taller. Sometimes it is found on your knees. -------------------- 🔹 THE SPARROW There is a moment in the song where a sparrow moves through the wind. She does not wait for the sky to become quiet. She does not demand that the wind stop blowing. She simply opens her wings and trusts where they will lead. That became another picture of what this song means to me. We may never get perfect conditions. The storm may still come. The wind may still blow. The road may still be difficult.
