How long does it take to recover from a hair transplant? As Dr. Sachin Pawar, Hair Transplant Surgeon at HairMD, Pune, explains in this video, recovery time depends on which procedure you choose and has two separate timelines to understand: the donor area and the grafted (recipient) area.
FUT recovery: a 6 to 10 inch strip is removed and closed with sutures, leaving a linear scar. This is more painful - you can't sleep on your back, and pain typically lasts 8 to 10 days. Sutures are removed around 2 weeks after surgery.
FUE recovery: small individual punch extractions leave several small wounds rather than one large one, healing within 48 hours with minimal pain. The donor dressing can be removed the very next day, and normal activities can usually resume sooner than with FUT.
Recovering the grafted area (the same process for both FUT and FUE):
Some swelling is normal; elastic strapping on the forehead helps prevent it settling on the face, and at least 2 full days of rest is recommended
Grafts need about a week to establish their own blood supply - handle the area gently during this time
Hair washing can start 5 days after surgery, with scabs naturally falling off within 7 to 10 days
New hairline growth typically becomes visible around a week after surgery, and most people can resume their normal routine around this time, depending on the complexity of the surgery
About shedding: transplanted hair typically begins shedding around 6 to 8 weeks after surgery. This is temporary - only the hair shaft sheds while the follicle survives - and new growth generally resumes within 5 to 6 weeks of shedding starting. This can be alarming, but it does not mean the transplant has failed. PRP or Mesotherapy can help stimulate growth during this phase, and your surgeon may prescribe Minoxidil and Finasteride to protect your existing, non-transplanted hair.
In summary: most patients resume their normal routine around 2 weeks after FUT and around 3 days after FUE, though some cosmetic scabbing (easily covered with a cap) may remain visible a little longer.
