How does a small coffee shop actually make money?
A $5 or $6 coffee may look incredibly profitable at first glance. Coffee beans, milk, sugar, and a cup don't seem to cost very much compared with the selling price. But a coffee shop has far more expenses than the ingredients inside the cup.
In this episode of Every Dollar Economics, we follow the money through a typical small coffee shop and break down the economics behind the business. We'll look at revenue, average ticket size, product mix, ingredient costs, employee wages, rent, utilities, equipment, payment processing, waste, and the difference between gross margin and actual net profit.
We'll also examine why selling more drinks isn't automatically the answer, why location matters so much, how fixed costs change the economics of every additional cup, and why food and add-on purchases can be just as important as coffee itself.
The goal isn't to assume that every coffee shop earns the same margin. Instead, we'll build a simple illustrative model to understand how the economics work and identify the variables that determine whether a small café survives, struggles, or becomes highly profitable.
Coffee remains deeply embedded in American consumer behavior. The National Coffee Association reported in 2026 that 66% of American adults had coffee in the past day, while specialty coffee reached a record 48%.
