Cairo, Illinois sits at the very bottom of the state, where the Ohio River runs into the Mississippi. In 1920 more than 15,000 people lived here. By the Census Bureau's estimate for July 2025, about 1,500 do. This is the story of a town built on the bet that everyone moving through the middle of America would have to pass through it - and of how the trains, the trucks and the interstate all found ways to pass it by. The failed paper city Charles Dickens called "this dismal Cairo." The Illinois Central main line. Grant's first Civil War base. The mansions of Washington Avenue and the 1889 bridge, then the longest metal structure in the world. The 1909 lynching and Ida B. Wells. Operation Open City in 1962, and the boycott and violence of 1967-1972. The night in 2011 the Army Corps blew the Birds Point levee, the 2017 public housing closures, and a river port that is still waiting to be built. If you were driving down I-57, would you take Exit 1 and spend an afternoon in Cairo, or would you keep going like almost everyone else?
