For two hundred years, the camera has been quietly rewriting what it means to remember.
It began in a darkened room in 1826, where Joseph Nicéphore Niépce pointed a wooden box out of his window and waited nearly eight hours for the world's first photograph. It exploded in 1888 when George Eastman put a box camera in every hand and told the world, "You press the button, we do the rest." It was betrayed in 1975, when a 24-year-old Kodak engineer invented the digital camera — and his own company buried it. And today, the camera lives in your pocket, sees in the dark, and decides what your memories look like before you even press the shutter.
This is the full story — four parts, one journey.
