I Wanna Be A Sailor is a great classic cartoon directed by none other than the king of edgy whit, Tex Avery! It was released on September 25, 1937 and I do not think it has looked as good as our version since! One of the forgotten Merrie Melodies cartoons it seems to be forgotten on most of the old collections, but let there be not doubt, this is classic Tex Avery!
Like so many of the really good Merrie Melodies color cartoons, I Wanna Be A Sailor was re-released on April 30, 1949 as a Blue Ribbon edition. In large part it fell between the cracks of the normal Warner Bros discussions because it fell into public domain due to the negligence of United Artists to renew the copyright at the time if lapsed. Public Domainers do not spend the money or time that we did and still do to get these classics to their best possible viewing condition.
A big factor in why this particular cartoon looks so horrible on other versions it the large amount of Green in the film, you could say it stars green, and lots of blue backgrounds. When film deuterates, green goes fast, early poor mastering averaged the blue and the green making a sick green blue color for the star parrot, this really spoiled what Tex was trying to get out of the bold green color. As I have said so many times before, it is color and sound first and fomost that holds interest in a any filmed entertainment. We have brought the colors back to what they were on the screen! Green is Green and Blue is Blue, and Red is put back in the accents as it was intended!
The story is basically about a mother Parrot trying to teach her 3 kids how to say "Polly Want a Cracker" in home school like setting. The boy parrot is not having it, he says ahhh I don't wan any cracker I wanna be a sailor. Boys will be boys and he builds a kid built "ship" out of a barrel and enlists a sailor to work under him as captain of his pirate ship.
Now the important thing to get to understand the plot is that is father is not present, his father was a sailor and without his father to teach him, he will be what he imagens his dad would want him to be. Single mon, try's her best to stop him, but boys want to please their dads even if that dad is not in the picture. The boat gets in trouble as a storm comes up and mom saves him, he learns a new love for his mom.
I am bring this cartoon out on Mothers Day, because it think it is a great message to moms and their kids, that moms are always there to save the day, even if you are a bad little kid!
I truly love this classic Looney Tunes Cartoon, and I believe it is as close to the theatrical edit and the color and sound as it would have been in the theater. Remember, 3 color Technicolor was still new, and over the top primary colors were the tool of the day if you were lucky enough to have the process. Our colors come directly from Technicolor's records, and this cartoon was never dull, never reserved - it was bright - just like this!
I hope you enjoy this classic cartoon for years to come!
