In deep dusk, a broad plain stretches below the grassy edge of a high plateau, with distant mountains along the horizon. The sky fills more than half the view, deep navy blue above, turning blue-violet and then pinkish violet lower down. A single thin band of gold and orange afterglow rests just above the mountains, the sky’s only warm colour. Countless stars gather most closely in the upper sky and on the left, their white points varying in size and brightness. The upper right remains a broad expanse of deep blue. High on the left, the faint blue-violet band of the Milky Way runs diagonally down toward the right, with tiny stars close together within it. The long, low mountain range forms a deep blue silhouette, with a slightly higher peak left of centre.
The plain lies in subdued blue, with gentle hills among a patchwork of fields. Dark rows and clumps of trees follow the divisions between them, with pointed trees among the groups. In the foreground, tall dry grass glows gold and orange around scattered grey rocks. The rocks are rounded and uneven, marked with dark, lichen-like patches and touched with gold on their upper surfaces. A large rounded boulder stands to Everglow’s right, its mottled grey surface golden along the upper left. The warm colours of the grass and rock tops stand against the blue of the plain below. There is no need to hurry. For a little while, it is enough to be here.
Right of centre, Everglow stands alone on the grass at the plateau’s edge, seen from behind at a slight three-quarter angle. Her feet are together in brown laced boots that reach below her knees. She faces out over the plain toward the horizon, her head turned very slightly to her left. Her long, straight silver-white hair falls nearly to her waist, with a thin braid along the left side and a few ends straying to the right. Her long dark green cloak has its hood lowered behind her shoulders. Gold embroidered bands trim the hem and the ends of its wide short sleeves, with long white sleeves beneath. The hem spreads wide to her right, as if in a breeze. Her lute is slung on her back, its round body a little to the right, its neck and pegbox rising diagonally above her right shoulder. The wood is warm yellow-brown, with a round soundhole in the body. Her left arm hangs straight at her side, the white sleeve ending in a brown cuff. Her bare left hand is visible below her left hip. A brown leather belt circles her waist, and a brown leather pouch rests at her left hip.

I have loved the stars too truly to be fearful of the night.
The sentence places sincerity at the heart of loving the stars. Such love becomes a steady presence, carrying the warmth of what has been cherished into quiet hours. There is hope in this thought: what you have loved can keep watch over you.
Reading and study can unfold within that sense of companionship. As you spend time with a passage or follow an idea, the thought of starlight can have a place beside your work. Affection gives those solitary moments a gentle warmth.
This music offers room to stay with that warmth. The love held in the sentence can be a small source of hope while your attention settles. You may rest in the company of what you have loved.
This is the last line of the fourth stanza of Sarah Williams’s poem "The Old Astronomer", on page 69 of Twilight Hours: A Legacy of Verse (1868). The on-screen caption shows its first half. Our text was checked against the 1868 first edition, whose title page reads 'STRAHAN & CO. … 1868' and gives the author as 'SARAH WILLIAMS (SADIE)'. The widely known wording 'too fondly' is a later variant; the 1868 first edition reads 'too truly'.
