SITUATION: A plain concrete beam having a trapezoidal section with a hollow circular portion of diameter 150 mm, the center of which is located at mid-height, has a width of 300 mm at the top and 200 mm at the bottom. The overall depth of the beam is 600 mm. The tensile strength of concrete is ft = 3 MPa and ultimate compressive strength f’c = 20 MPa.
1. Determine the positive bending moment (kN-m) that causes the section to crack.
A. 36.88 C. 40.97
B. 48.26 D. 51.36
2. What is the maximum bending stress in compression (MPa) upon cracking?
A. 3.62 C. 2.72
B. 2.58 D. 3.60
3. If the section is reinforced with 3-25 mm diameter bars 60 mm from the bottom, determine the cracking moment (kN-m) according to provisions of NSCP.
A. 48.92 C. 52.60
B. 38.85 D. 45.21
