There may be a truck sitting in the back corner of a used lot right now, unwashed with dead bugs on the grille, that will outlast every shiny thing parked up front with a payment plan.
Not a collector's truck. Not a show truck. The one with a split seat and a drooping headliner and an engine underneath so healthy it will run another two hundred thousand miles.
In this video, Earl counts down 10 cheap trucks almost everybody walks straight past - and gets to the one truck you can buy once, drive into the ground for fifteen years, and hand to your grandkid still running.
You will discover:
✓ The little V6 that is really a small block Vortec with two cylinders lopped off, and why its parts sit on every shelf in America
✓ The half-ton that sells for a fraction of a comparable Tundra for one silly reason - the badge on the tailgate
✓ The cold-start tick to listen for, and how to use it as leverage instead of walking away
✓ Which Silverado generation to buy, and why you must never buy the one with the cylinder-shutoff system
✓ The unibody truck diesel folks wince at, with a dry lockable trunk built into the bed
✓ How to avoid the Ranger tax entirely by searching a different name
✓ The engine the forums call the cockroach, and why a snapped timing belt does not destroy it
✓ The front-end clunk that scares buyers off, which is really a ten-dollar tub of grease
✓ The truck that is a Nissan built by Nissan on the same line, sold at a discount because nobody knows the name
✓ Why the older Tacoma V6 is the more robust motor, and what the taco lean actually is
✓ The strawberry milkshake of death, and the exact year Nissan fixed it
✓ And at number one, why the million-mile truck is not a campfire story, and what happened when they tore one down to look
The most important rule is simple. You are buying the powertrain, not the paint. Paint is the cheapest thing on a truck to fix and the engine is the most expensive, so buy the good engine and let it be ugly. Get a hundred-dollar pre-purchase inspection, buy a twenty-dollar code scanner, and search by the name nobody else types.
This is one old wrench-turner's experience and nothing more. Earl has no dealership, no lot, and no affiliate links.
It is not a conspiracy, friend. It is just money. They found that complicated trucks make them more coming and going, and simple ones do not. And if you are driving something newer that is nickel and diming you right now, do not beat yourself up. Nobody told you the truth about how they build these anymore.
Tell us in the comments which of these ten trucks you have owned or driven and how many miles you put on it, and the one cheap truck you think was left off this list.
