This video covers day three of my seven-day Eastern Caribbean cruise aboard Norwegian Luna. I spent Day 3 in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. This is a new cruise destination and has quickly become a popular stop on many cruise lines' Eastern Caribbean cruises. That's especially true for Norwegian. Their most popular seven-day Eastern Caribbean cruise (the one I took on this trip) always features a stop here. This is my third time visiting this destination on a cruise, and I have to say that I like it. There's a wide variety of excursions, and the port itself is very nice. Rather than just a pier, there's an entire resort just for cruise ships. This includes shopping, restaurants, and a free-to-use pool. It's very similar to Costa Maya.
We decided to go on the Damajagua Waterfalls Adventure. We very much enjoyed this excursion. We got to see a lot of Dominican nature, though many other cruise ship passengers were doing it with us. The falls themselves had many fun natural waterslides and cliffs that you could jump off. I would do this excursion again when I go back.
Norwegian Luna is Norwegian's newest ship, having debuted in March 2026. At 156,300 gross tons, she's a mega ship, but she's on the smaller end of what most mass-market cruise lines have been building these days. She's even smaller than most of the ships in Norwegian's previous class that came out during the 2010s, the Breakaway class. What she doesn't have in size, she makes up for in design. The interior design of the Prima class ships (of which Norwegian Luna is a part) feels more upscale than what the brand has previously released. There's a modern sophistication to most of the onboard venues that creates a nice cruising experience. While she looks good, there are some serious issues with the layout of this ship. I've talked about this more extensively in my other videos, but a lot of the venues are way smaller than what they should be for a ship with this guest capacity. Everything from the main pool to the comedy club gets rammed with crowds during peak times. This creates an experience that goes against Norwegian's Freestyle cruising because you must plan and get to most things early on this ship if you want a spot.
One other thing that is disappointing about the direction Norwegian is heading with their new products is the quality of their entertainment. The main theater shows on this ship are a far cry from what their main competitor, Royal Caribbean, is putting out on their flagship products. I simply expect better from Norwegian. You can see some clips from one of the headline shows aboard the Norwegian Luna towards the end of the video.
To end with a positive note, the service on this cruise was phenomenal. Every crew member I interacted with put a high level of effort into being welcoming and enthusiastic about the service they provided to their guests. This included everyone from the wait staff in the restaurant to housekeeping.
