If I were adapting one Greek myth into an epic miniseries, I wouldn’t choose The Odyssey. I’d choose the Minotaur saga. Because the story of the Minotaur is much bigger than Theseus walking into a labyrinth and killing a monster. It begins with King Minos, Poseidon, a divine white bull, and one of the most disturbing acts of revenge in Greek mythology. From there it expands into the birth of the Minotaur, the construction of the labyrinth, Athens being forced to send human sacrifices to Crete, the birth and rise of Theseus, Medea trying to kill him, Ariadne helping him enter the labyrinth, Daedalus and Icarus escaping Crete, and finally Minos getting one of mythology’s strangest comeuppances. It’s basically an entire cinematic universe hiding inside one myth. In this video, I lay out how I would turn that sprawling mythology into a four- or five-episode miniseries called The Island of Crete—starting with Minos’s rise to power and ending with Theseus returning to Athens as king. You’ve got gods feuding with each other, political intrigue, monsters, curses, war, romance, betrayal, human sacrifice, a labyrinth, a witch cameo, flying inventors, and one very angry Poseidon. Greek mythology doesn’t need to be simplified. It needs someone willing to embrace how absolutely insane it already is.
