In this episode, Morimae, your navigator for WABI CHANNEL, explores how the colors and forms of suiseki evoke the landscapes of Japan's four seasons. From mountains glowing in the first light of the New Year and peaks veiled in spring haze to refreshing waterfalls and wave-worn reefs in summer, autumn colors, and rugged winter mountains, we follow the changing seasons through the scenes suggested by different stones. The enjoyment of suiseki goes beyond a stone's shape and color. Water trays and accompanying objects help create a scene, while mitate—the art of imaginative interpretation—invites us to picture landscapes in our minds. We hope you enjoy the changing seasonal landscapes these stones inspire.
