Why is Ashadha Purnima so significant?
More than 2,600 years ago, on this sacred occasion, Lord Buddha delivered his First Sermon at Sarnath, setting in motion the Wheel of Dharma (Dhammacakkappavattana). It was here that He revealed the Four Noble Truths, taught the Noble Eightfold Path, and established the Buddhist Sangha, marking the beginning of one of the world's greatest spiritual traditions.
Across the Buddhist world, this holy day is celebrated as Dharmachakkapavattana Divas in India, Asalha Puja in Thailand and Myanmar, Esala Poya in Sri Lanka, and Chokhor Duechen in Tibet and the Himalayan region. While the dates may differ due to variations in historical traditions and lunar calendar systems, the message remains the same.
Ashadha Purnima reminds us that wisdom, compassion, mindfulness, and the Middle Way continue to guide humanity, just as they did over twenty-six centuries ago.
Today, Sarnath remains one of the world's most revered Buddhist pilgrimage destinations, welcoming millions of pilgrims and visitors each year who come to walk in the footsteps of the Buddha and experience the birthplace of His teachings.
