We’re renovating our old Swedish root cellar (jordkällare) here at Lilla Backeberga — and this is only **Part 1**. 🌿🧱
This old cellar will eventually become a beautiful and functional storage space for our farm life — for **potatoes, carrots, vegetables, wine and other things we want to store throughout the year**.
But before we can use it properly, there’s quite a bit of renovation to do.
In this first part, we’re working on the **stone walls, the entrance and the doors**. I had already renovated the front earlier in the year, but then realized that I hadn’t built the stonework exactly the way I wanted it. 😅
So now I’m going back and fixing it — grinding and brushing the stones to create larger, more natural-looking gaps and give the cellar a more traditional, old Swedish root cellar feel.
I try several different brushes and techniques, including wetting the stones before brushing them, and show you what worked best for me.
Meanwhile, Oskar is working on the **new insulated doors**, using sheep’s wool insulation and building the frames for the two-door entrance.
And this is just the beginning. 🤍
In the upcoming parts, we’ll continue renovating the **inside of the root cellar**, making it not only practical for storing vegetables and wine, but also a beautiful space that fits our old Swedish farmhouse.
We’re doing everything ourselves, learning as we go — and sometimes realizing that we should have done things differently the first time. 😅
Come along for the whole transformation from an old Swedish *jordkällare* to our finished farmhouse storage cellar. 🍷🥕🥔
