Group flags language barrier for Garo candidates in DSC recruitment

The Khasi Hills Achik Joint Action Committee (KHAJAC) has urged the Meghalaya Government to make the language requirement for District Selection Committee (DSC) recruitment optional. Speaking to the media after meeting the Governor at Lok Bhavan on Thursday, committee representative Manuel Ch Marak said the existing policy, which requires candidates to know Garo in the Garo Hills region and Khasi in the Khasi Hills region, has placed Garo candidates residing in the Khasi Hills at a disadvantage. He pointed out that a sizeable Garo population has been residing in the Khasi Hills region for generations and should not be denied equal opportunities in government recruitment because of a region-specific language requirement. Marak argued that since both Khasi and Garo have been recognised as official languages of Meghalaya, candidates should be given the choice of appearing for DSC recruitment examinations in either language. He said the present arrangement puts Garo candidates in the Khasi Hills at a disadvantage, particularly those who are more comfortable expressing themselves in Garo, their mother tongue. The committee has therefore sought the Governor’s intervention and urged the state government to review the recruitment policy to allow candidates to appear in their preferred official language. It also maintained that language should not become a barrier to government employment and that all communities residing in Meghalaya should be provided equal opportunities in the recruitment process.
