Change sounds inspiring until it gets uncomfortable. We’ve both seen it in therapy and coaching: someone makes a solid plan, tries it for a week, then comes back frustrated that it didn’t instantly fix the relationship, the stress, or the stuck feeling. So we slow the whole thing down and ask a question that cuts through noise fast: why do you want to change, and what’s the real benefit?
We use the STIR personality styles as a practical framework for self-awareness and growth, walking through what it can look like to create space for movement in each style. For Stabilizers, that can mean loosening the need for rules and order so spontaneity has room to breathe. For Transformers, it can mean dialing back dismissal or “joking past” serious moments so you’re taken seriously when it matters. For Initiators, it often means not doing everything and noticing the exhaustion that comes from nonstop motion. For Responders, it means seeing how overfunctioning and caretaking can turn into burnout and boundary problems.
Along the way, we talk about the subtle “rewards” that make sustained change possible, why extremes and crisis moments often give us permission to shift, and how attraction and projection show up in couples counseling. We also touch on dreams as a mirror: when a dream character drives you nuts, what if it’s actually a part of you trying to get your attention?
