]Sometimes you have an idea or objective in mind and just go for it. Life can meet you halfway. My Hong Kong story unfolds through coincidences, taking chances, and improvising when plans change.
Taiwan
While in southern Taiwan, I choose to fly to Hong Kong from Taichung rather than Kaohsiung. After a bus from Kenting, a high-speed train, and a cab to the airport, I arrive in Hong Kong. While waiting for my luggage, I notice a Taiwanese lady. She only speaks Mandarin, so we communicate through Google Translate.
Day 1 — Solo exploring
Solo exploring Hong Kong island, Victoria Harbour, coffee and pastries, ending the day with Monster building.
Day 2 — Exploring together
We spend two hours at Halfway Coffee talking through Google Translate, then explore Tai Kwun and Man Mo Temple. We walk toward Kennedy Town, visit an iconic viewpoint, and watch the sunset by the sea. I improvise and take a double-decker tram with her at night. Later, she meets her friends for dinner, and I continue exploring alone.
Day 3 — Victoria Peak hike
I get an iced Americano and hike a 7.5 km circuit around Victoria Peak, enjoying magnificent city views and my own company. After a pizza before the hike, I’m hungry enough for another afterward.
That night, she messages me to meet by the pier. We walk and talk for around two hours using Google Translate. I accompany her to her hotel, where she tells me she isn’t ready for anything long-term. I accept it, give her space, and walk back to my own place alone.
Day 4 — Interval with Adidas Runners Hong Kong
After a day exploring the city, covering 10 km and around 15,000 steps, I join AR HK for an interval session: 10 × 300 m at a 4:30/km pace.
Day 5 — Macau detour
In the morning, Vietnam’s e-visa system returns an ambiguous error, leaving me waiting another three days for a response. I decide to visit Macau for the day.
On arrival, an officer sees my Turkish passport and singles me out from more than 500 passengers. I’m taken to an inspection room and questioned for around 45 minutes about my purpose of visit and what I’m doing in Macau. After showing them my social media and travel content, I’m taken to another room for a photo and fingerprints before they grant me just one day of entry instead of the usual 30 days.
I explore the old town, eat pastel de nata, and return to Hong Kong by night boat. I keep exploring Hong Kong while waiting for Vietnam’s response.
Day 6 — Coincidence and Repulse Bay
I stumble upon a Korean lady at the place I’m staying, and we visit Repulse Bay together. The weather is grey, and I’m the only one swimming. We talk, hug, and enjoy our time together. When the rain starts, I give her my jacket to protect her from getting wet or sick. We eat beef noodle soup at a nearby shop.
Day 7 — Exploring together
Having already visited most of Hong Kong’s major sights, I know where to take her. We visit Monster Building, Kennedy Town, Tai Kwun, and Man Mo Temple, eating beef noodle soup at a better shop near Tai Kwun along the way.
We walk toward Central, cross the harbour for the evening light show at Tsim Sha Tsui, then visit the night market and have dinner at a local restaurant. I give her a magnet from Malaysian Borneo. When we discuss possibly meeting again, she says she might if she isn’t busy, then leaves for South Korea.
I accept where things stand and spend another day exploring Hong Kong, while Vietnam’s e-visa system produces another error.
Day 8 — Leaving Hong Kong
Before leaving Hong Kong for my next destination, I visit a mosque and Shek O Beach on my own.
What I realize on this Hong Kong journey is I'm more capable of love and being loved than I thought. Even if the relationships end abruptly or on ambiguous state.
Have you ever had an experience that changed how you see yourself? If you enjoy this journey, subscribe for my next journey. Until then, take care, bye.
