Place Masséna, the city's central square, was constructed between 1832 and 1850 on arcades covering the Paillon River. At its southern end stands the Fontaine du Soleil, featuring a 7-meter marble Apollo by sculptor Alfred Janniot surrounded by five bronze figures representing Earth, Mars, Venus, Mercury, and Saturn. Inaugurated in 1956, the Apollo was controversial enough to be removed in the 1970s and only restored to the square in 2011.
