You had to be there. That was the whole business.
A balloon that floats has about a day in it. It cannot be made in advance, cannot be stored, and cannot be shipped. Somebody has to fill it where you are standing, on the day, and you carry it out by hand. Amazon has never solved that and it never will.
Which meant Party City had something almost no retailer in America had. While every other store spent twenty years watching the internet take their customers one aisle at a time, Party City sold a product the internet was physically incapable of delivering.
They were untouchable. For thirty years, that was true. At their peak they were doing two point four billion dollars a year across nearly nine hundred stores, and selling more than a third of every party supply bought in America.
In December 2024 they filed for bankruptcy for the second time in two years. By February every store was closed and twelve thousand people had lost their jobs.
You have probably heard why. Amazon. The malls. Nobody throwing parties anymore. All of that is true and none of it is what killed them.
Because the thing that destroyed Party City is the exact same thing that made it untouchable.
This is the story of the two billion dollar party empire that was destroyed by its own best product.
