This is an analysis of the Gongaga scene between Cloud and Tifa, after what happened at the reactor. In no way is this to slander Tifa's character, she's still my favorite. The relationship is however something that needs to be discussed. And what happened during this scene did not make Tifa look too good- but we all make mistakes.
** I had waaaaay too much to say about this, so it had to get its own video. This is all done in one take and some cuts, so don't expect a masterpiece 😹 just my thoughts. And ain't no way i'm going to suffer an hour listening to myself talk, just to check if I missed stuff or forgot to cut.
A little bit about their trauma bond:
Shared traumatic experiences can create intense emotional connections between individuals, often referred to as trauma bonding. This occurs when people endure stressful or painful events together, fostering a sense of unity and dependence. The shared hardship can blur boundaries, leading to strong attachments that are rooted in the mutual survival of the traumatic experience, rather than healthy relational dynamics. These bonds can be particularly strong, making it difficult for individuals to recognize unhealthy aspects of the relationship or to separate from it, despite negative consequences.
Emotional Dependence: Tifa often feels responsible for Cloud's well-being, stemming from her desire to support him through his psychological struggles. This creates an emotional dependency, where she places Cloud's needs above her own. Although in this clip she discarded his emotional state for her own selfishness to get what she wants out of it.
Protective Instinct: Tifa's protective behavior towards Cloud is driven by their shared experiences and her own trauma. She is motivated by a need to safeguard him from further harm, which can sometimes lead to self-sacrificial tendencies.
Mutual Understanding: Their shared trauma allows them to understand each others trauma. This mutual understanding, while a source of strength, also binds them in a cycle where their relationship is heavily influenced by past pains. In this case, Tifa is heavily shackled to the past.
Trauma bonding can also create challenges. The intense emotional connection rooted in shared suffering can make it difficult for both Tifa and Cloud to move beyond their past and develop a healthier, more balanced relationship.
