What does it take to work 70 hours a week and still show up with a smile? In Episode 3 of Futures of Work, “The Challenges Facing Restaurant Workers,” CCEP student fellows Sophie Rivasplata and Emily Kurtz explore the realities behind the service we often take for granted. Through conversations with Johnny and Mateo, they examine stagnant wages, workplace intimidation, the emotional toll of juggling multiple jobs, and what it means to feel seen and supported at work. Their stories reveal both the costs of worker exploitation and how employers can build workplaces rooted in care, stability, and respect. Produced by the California Center for Ethics & Policy at Cal Poly Pomona. Hosted by Brady Collins, professor of political science and CCEP faculty fellow.
