Command & Conquer: Red Alert turned 30 years old, and it's time to look back at the game that defined the golden age of real-time strategy. Following my retrospective on Jeff Wayne's The War of the Worlds, I wanted to dive into another childhood obsession that completely shaped my love for PC gaming.
From Frank Klepacki’s iconic, adrenaline-pumping "Hell March" soundtrack to the legendary live-action FMV cutscenes featuring Stalin and Kane, Westwood Studios created absolute lightning in a bottle back in 1996. Whether you were spamming Soviet Mammoth Tanks or orchestrating stealthy Allied Chronosphere drops, Red Alert offered a level of chaos, strategy, and pure fun that few modern games can replicate.
Join me for a nostalgic trip down memory lane as we analyze why this 90s RTS masterpiece still holds up perfectly today.
Did you fight for the Allies or the Soviets? What was your ultimate base defense strategy? Let me know your favorite memories of Westwood Studios and C&C in the comments below!
